About Basilica di Sant'Antonino
Sorrento's oldest church dedicated to the town's patron saint, Sant'Antonino Abate, an 11th-century basilica containing extraordinary ex-votos including whale ribs, and the tomb of the saint who died in Sorrento around 625 AD.
The Basilica di Sant'Antonino is the oldest church in Sorrento, dedicated to the town's patron saint, Sant'Antonino Abate, who was a Benedictine monk from Campania and died in Sorrento around 625 AD. The current church dates primarily from the 11th century, though it stands on a site of earlier worship and has been substantially modified and extended in subsequent centuries. The interior is notable for several remarkable features: the crypt beneath the church contains the saint's tomb and various ancient votive objects; and the portico of the church is hung with ex-votos, votive offerings left by those saved from dangers of the sea, that include, strikingly, the ribs and a vertebra of a sperm whale that was found dead in the Bay of Naples in the 19th century. These whale bones have been displayed here as a symbol of the sea's power and as a tribute to the protection of the saint. The basilica is the centre of the town's major annual festival, the Festa di Sant'Antonino on February 14th, when Sorrento celebrates its patron with processions, music, and fireworks. The church is entered from a small piazza that functions as one of the quiet social gathering points of the historic centre.
Did you know? The whale ribs in the portico of Sant'Antonino are thought to come from a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) found dead in the Bay of Naples in the 19th century. The sperm whale, the species of Moby Dick, is the largest toothed predator on Earth and occasionally appears in the Mediterranean, though sightings are rare today.
