About Pinacoteca Nazionale

The National Picture Gallery in Palazzo Buonsignori houses the world's most complete collection of the Sienese school, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti brothers, tracing the development of one of medieval Europe's greatest artistic traditions.

The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, housed in the Gothic Palazzo Buonsignori in Via San Pietro, contains the most comprehensive collection of Sienese school painting in the world. The collection traces the development of the Sienese artistic tradition from its Byzantine origins in the twelfth century through the great Gothic masters of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, into the fifteenth century and beyond.

Duccio di Buoninsegna, the founder of the Sienese school, is represented by the small but exquisite Madonna dei Francescani (c.1285–86). The collection traces how the innovations Duccio introduced, the softening of the hieratic Byzantine tradition into something more human, more emotionally accessible, were developed by his successors Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers into what became one of the most sophisticated artistic traditions of medieval Europe. Particularly important is the collection of works by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and Sassetta.

Did you know? Duccio di Buoninsegna's great Maestà altarpiece, the founding masterpiece of the Sienese school, was carried from his workshop to Siena Cathedral in a great civic procession in 1311 in which the entire population of the city participated, shops were closed, and bells rang all day.
