About Fortezza Medicea & Enoteca Italiana

The Fortezza Medicea is the imposing 16th-century Medici fortress at the northern edge of Siena, now transformed into a public park and home to the Enoteca Italiana, a permanent wine exhibition and tasting venue showcasing bottles from across Italy.

The Fortezza Medicea is a large sixteenth-century bastioned fortress built by order of Cosimo I de' Medici between 1560 and 1563, following the Florentine conquest of Siena in 1555 after a brutal siege. The fortress was built to dominate and control the conquered city, its walls and ramparts designed according to the latest principles of Renaissance military engineering by Baldassarre Lanci.

The fortress sits at the northern edge of the historic centre, its massive brick walls and projecting bastions providing one of the most dramatic silhouettes in Siena's skyline. The interior, originally a parade ground and garrison, is now a large public garden, popular with Sienese families in the evening. The vaulted brick spaces under the ramparts house the Enoteca Italiana, a permanent national wine exhibition, established in 1960, that maintains a collection of wines from every DOC and DOCG wine zone in Italy. The enoteca offers wine tasting, a wine bar, and a shop selling bottles from across the peninsula.

Did you know? The siege of Siena by the Florentine and Imperial forces in 1554–55 lasted fourteen months and is one of the most brutal episodes of the Italian Wars, the population of Siena fell from approximately 40,000 before the siege to around 6,000 immediately after. The city never fully recovered its medieval population levels.
