About Acueducto de Segovia
One of the greatest surviving Roman aqueducts on earth: a two-tier wall of granite arches, nearly 2,000 years old, holding itself up across the whole valley without a single drop of mortar.
The Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in the world, and the symbol of the city. Built probably in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD, it carried water some 15 kilometres from the Sierra de Guadarrama to the hilltop town. Its monumental arcade, striding across the Plaza del Azoguejo, has around 167 arches in two tiers and rises about 28 metres at its highest point. It is built of unmortared granite ashlar, the blocks held together by their own balanced weight, with no cement or clamps. Thirty-six arches destroyed in an 11th-century Moorish attack were rebuilt under the Catholic Monarchs in the 15th century. The aqueduct supplied water to parts of Segovia until 1973, and forms part of the old town's UNESCO World Heritage listing of 1985.
Did you know? The entire aqueduct, thousands of tonnes of granite in two tiers, is built completely without mortar or cement: the blocks are held in place by nothing but their own carefully balanced weight.
