About Praza do Obradoiro

The main square of Santiago de Compostela, where pilgrims arrive at the end of the Camino, surrounded by the cathedral, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos, the Pazo de Raxoi, and the Colexio de San Xerome. One of the great architectural ensembles in Europe.

The Praza do Obradoiro is the monumental main square of Santiago de Compostela and one of the great architectural ensembles in Europe. It is bounded on the east by the Cathedral (Romanesque nave, Baroque Obradoiro façade); on the north by the Hostal dos Reis Católicos, a magnificent Plateresque Renaissance building commissioned by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1501 as a royal pilgrim hospital and now operating as a luxury parador hotel; on the west by the Pazo de Raxoi, an 18th-century Baroque building now serving as the city hall; and on the south by the Colexio de San Xerome (15th century), now part of the University of Santiago. The paving of the Praza is granite, uniformly laid; the square descends slightly from north to south, a grade that is not immediately apparent but that ensures water drainage and gives the square subtle visual movement. The arrival of pilgrims in the square, many kneeling, some in tears, most standing in silence before the cathedral façade, is one of the most affecting experiences available in Europe.

Did you know? Ferdinand and Isabella (the Catholic Monarchs) visited Santiago de Compostela in 1501, having completed the Reconquista with the fall of Granada in 1492 and dispatched Columbus in 1492, and commissioned the Hostal dos Reis Católicos as a royal hospital for pilgrims. The visit was a political statement as much as a religious act: the newly united Spain's monarchs demonstrating their piety and their connection to the great pilgrimage tradition.
