About Pórtico de la Gloria
The masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture in the Iberian Peninsula, carved by Master Mateo around 1188, the Pórtico de la Gloria inside the cathedral's west entrance features 200 carved figures in a theological programme of extraordinary sophistication. Restored 2017 after 16 years of conservation.
The Pórtico de la Gloria (Portal of Glory) is the Romanesque sculpted doorway inside the west entrance of Santiago Cathedral, created around 1188 by the Master Mateo under the patronage of King Ferdinand II of León. It consists of three doorways framed by a massive tympanum, lintel, jambs, and archivolts, entirely covered with 200 carved figures arranged in a complex theological programme. The central portal shows Christ in Majesty (Pantocrator) surrounded by the four evangelists and the 24 Elders of the Apocalypse playing musical instruments. The left portal depicts scenes from the Old Testament; the right portal depicts scenes from the Last Judgment. The central jamb-column shows Saint James as pilgrim, welcoming arrivals; below him is the figure of Master Mateo himself, the only realistic self-portrait in Romanesque sculpture. The pórtico underwent a comprehensive restoration programme (2011-2017) that revealed traces of original polychromy, the sculpture was originally brightly painted, not the bare stone visible today.
Did you know? The 24 Elders of the Apocalypse on the Pórtico de la Gloria are depicted playing specific medieval musical instruments, each identifiable: citolas, fiddles, hurdy-gurdies, lutes, and harps. The instruments are depicted with such accuracy that they have been used by musicologists to reconstruct medieval instrument types. Several Spanish early-music ensembles have created performances based on the instruments shown in the pórtico.
