About Santiago Old Town (Casco Histórico)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, the medieval old town of Santiago is built almost entirely of granite, with arcaded streets, pilgrim hospitals, Romanesque and Baroque churches, and a density of religious architecture unmatched in northern Spain.
The Casco Histórico (Historic Centre) of Santiago de Compostela was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and is one of the best-preserved medieval urban environments in Europe. The old town was designed around the cathedral and the needs of the millions of medieval pilgrims who passed through: the four principal streets approaching the cathedral (the Rúas do Franco, da Raíña, do Vilar, and de San Pedro) are all covered by granite arcades (soportales) that protect pedestrians from the frequent Galician rain. The architecture is overwhelmingly granite, the local stone, warm grey-gold, that gives the city its distinctive monochromatic but far from monotonous appearance. Key monuments beyond the cathedral include: the Romanesque Colegio de Fonseca (15th century, now the University Library), the Baroque Church of San Froilán, the Monastery of San Martino Pinario (the second-largest monastery in Spain), and the Praza das Praterías (the Silversmiths' Square, with its Romanesque fountain).
Did you know? The Codex Calixtinus, a 12th-century illuminated manuscript held in the Santiago Cathedral archive, is considered one of the most important medieval documents on the pilgrimage tradition and is sometimes called the first 'tourist guide' to the Camino de Santiago. Written by several authors (falsely attributed to Pope Calixtus II, hence the name), it contains music, sermons, accounts of miracles, and a detailed guide to the Camino Francés route. In 2011, the codex was stolen from the cathedral archive by a former employee; it was recovered in 2012 from his garage.
