About R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia
The most traditional of the great Haro bodegas, López de Heredia (founded 1877) makes wines by methods unchanged since the 19th century: very long aging in enormous old barrels, lengthy bottle rest, and release only when the wines are considered ready, often 15-20+ years after the harvest.
R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is one of the most remarkable wine estates in Spain, a bodega that has been making wine in essentially the same way since 1877 and that represents the most extreme expression of the traditional Rioja style. Founded by Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta in 1877 in the Barrio de la Estación, Haro, the winery is still owned and run by the López de Heredia family (now in the fourth generation). The wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in the winery's own vineyards, Viña Tondonia (on the north bank of the Ebro), Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo, and Viña Zaconia. Fermentation takes place in large open wooden vats; the wines are then aged in very old Bordeaux-style barrels (some dating from the 19th century) for periods that can exceed 10 years. The wines are then further aged in bottle for several more years before release. The result is a wine of extraordinary complexity and oxidative character that bears no resemblance to modern fruit-forward wine styles, and that divides tasters into passionate admirers and determined critics.
Did you know? López de Heredia's wines are among the most age-worthy in Spain. Bottles of Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva from the 1950s and 1960s appear at auction and are sometimes still in excellent condition, showing the extraordinary longevity that the combination of high natural acidity, oxidative aging, and gradual bottle development can achieve. The winery's own cellar contains a private 'library' of old vintages going back to the 1920s, held as a reference collection.
