About Sky Lagoon

An ocean-edge geothermal spa just south of Reykjavík, opened in 2021, where an infinity pool spills toward the North Atlantic and a seven-step ritual runs hot to cold.

Sky Lagoon is a geothermal spa at Kársnes harbour in Kópavogur, immediately south of Reykjavík, which opened in 2021. It has an oceanfront infinity edge overlooking the North Atlantic across Faxaflói bay, and its design draws on the Icelandic turf-house tradition, with turf walls and a turf-roofed structure framing the site. The lagoon water is kept at roughly 38 to 40 degrees Celsius. Although the water is geothermally heated, the lagoon is a purpose-built spa rather than a natural pool.

The spa's signature is a seven-step sequence called the Skjól Ritual. Its steps, in order, are Laug, a warm lagoon; Kuldi, a cold plunge; Ylur, an ocean-view sauna; Súld, a cold mist; Mýkt, an Icelandic sea-salt body scrub; Gufa, a steam room; and Saft, a crowberry elixir. On clear days, landmarks visible from the lagoon include the glacier-capped Snæfellsjökull and the peak Keilir.

Did you know? Sky Lagoon opened in 2021 on the shore at Kópavogur, just south of Reykjavík. Its infinity edge appears to pour straight into Faxaflói bay, giving bathers an uninterrupted view over the North Atlantic.
