About Hallgrímskirkja
Iceland's largest church, a 74.5-metre concrete tower shaped after the country's columnar basalt, crowns central Reykjavík; ride the lift up to its observation deck for the city's widest view.
Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran parish church on the Skólavörðuholt hill in central Reykjavík, and the largest church in Iceland. Its concrete tower rises 74.5 metres in stepped, wing-like flanks, a form the state architect Guðjón Samúelsson designed to echo Iceland's columnar basalt, mountains and glaciers. Samúelsson received the commission in 1937; construction ran from 1945 to 1986, though the building served its parish in stages throughout. A lift reaches an observation deck near the top with panoramic views over the city.
The church is named after Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614–1674), the poet and clergyman who wrote the Passion Hymns. Inside, a pipe organ built by Johannes Klais of Bonn, installed in 1992, stands about 15 metres tall with 5,275 pipes. In front stands a statue of Leif Erikson by Alexander Stirling Calder, a 1930 gift from the United States that predates the church itself.
Did you know? The statue of Leif Erikson out front is older than the church behind it. The United States gave it in 1930 to mark a thousand years of Iceland's parliament, fifteen years before construction began.
