About Musée du Quai Branly

A stunning Jean Nouvel museum dedicated to the arts of Africa, Oceania, Asia and the Americas, with Patrick Blanc's extraordinary living green wall on its facade.

The Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac is one of the most architecturally distinctive museums in Paris, designed by Jean Nouvel and opened in 2006 to house France's great collection of non-European art and artefacts. The building is a work of art in itself: it sits on pilotis above a lush garden, and its north facade is covered by Patrick Blanc's celebrated "mur végétal", a vertical garden of 800 square metres containing 15,000 plants from 150 species, one of the most famous living walls in the world.

The collection spans 370,000 objects from sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania, the Americas, and Asia, ranging from pre-Columbian gold to Aboriginal paintings to Japanese armour to Amazonian featherwork. The atmospheric interior, with its coloured-glass windows, undulating floor, and dim theatrical lighting, creates a sense of entering a different world. Particular highlights include the extraordinary collection of African masks and sculptures, the rare Oceanian ceremonial objects, and the indigenous American works.

Did you know? Patrick Blanc's living wall on the facade contains 15,000 plants from 150 species spread across 800 square metres, it is considered one of the finest vertical gardens in the world.
