About Musée Matisse

The museum of the painter who loved Nice best, in an ochre villa among Cimiez's olive trees, following Matisse from his sunlit Riviera rooms to the radiant cut-outs of his final years.

The Musée Matisse, opened in 1963, occupies the Villa des Arènes, a 17th-century villa (built 1670-85) in the olive grove of the Cimiez district above Nice. Henri Matisse lived and worked in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954, drawn by the Riviera light, and the museum holds one of the most important collections of his work, built largely from donations by the artist and his heirs: paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, and the great cut-out compositions of his final years. The red-ochre villa was once the home of a Nice consul and takes its name from the nearby Roman arena, not to be confused with it. Matisse is buried in the Cimiez cemetery a short walk away. The museum lies within Cimiez, above the historic city of Nice.

Did you know? In his last years, old and often bedridden, Matisse reinvented his art by cutting shapes from sheets of painted paper, 'drawing with scissors', he called it, creating the weightless, radiant cut-outs that are among the most loved works of the century.
