About Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate

The Baroque cathedral of Nice, its Genoese tiled dome floating over the old town, dedicated to a teenage martyr whose body, legend says, drifted here in a boat steered by angels.

The Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate is the Baroque cathedral of Nice, on the Place Rossetti in the old town, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and to Saint Réparate, the city's patron. Its main body was built between 1650 and 1685 and consecrated in 1699, to designs by Jean-André Guibert on a Latin-cross plan modelled on the church of Santa Susanna in Rome; its dome is clad in Genoese-style glazed tiles, a landmark of the old-town skyline, and its bell tower was added in 1731-57. Saint Réparate was, by tradition, a young martyr of the 3rd century; a legend holds that her body drifted to Nice in a boat guided by angels, giving the Baie des Anges its name. Classed a historic monument in 1906 and a minor basilica since 1949, it stands within the historic city of Nice.

Did you know? Legend says the body of Saint Réparate drifted to Nice in an oarless boat, guided across the sea by the breath of angels, and that this is how the bay here came to be called the Baie des Anges, the Bay of Angels.
