About Capodimonte Museum and Park
A Bourbon royal palace on a hill above Naples, housing one of Italy's greatest art collections, Titian, Raphael, Caravaggio, Botticelli, with sweeping views of the city and Vesuvius from its terrace.
The Museo di Capodimonte occupies the great Bourbon royal palace built by King Charles III from 1738 on the hill of Capodimonte above Naples, surrounded by an enormous royal park, the largest in Naples. The palace was designed from the outset to house the Farnese Collection, the extraordinary art collection inherited by Charles III through his mother Elisabetta Farnese, and has been continuously enriched since. Today the museum holds over 47,000 works including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, drawings, and decorative arts. The first floor contains the Farnese Collection: Titian's monumental portrait of Pope Paul III Farnese with his grandsons, Raphael's Holy Family and Portrait of a Lady, Botticelli's Madonna with Child and Angels. The second floor is devoted to Neapolitan painting: an extraordinary collection of works by local masters from the 13th to the 19th century. Caravaggio's immense Flagellation of Christ dominates one room. The park, planted with ancient oaks and dotted with fountains, offers magnificent views of Naples and the bay. The complex requires at least half a day.
Did you know? The Capodimonte collection contains Titian's portrait of Pope Paul III with his grandsons, considered one of the greatest portraits in Italian Renaissance painting, painted during the artist's visit to Rome in 1545–1546.
