About Prince's Palace (Palais Princier)
The Prince's Palace, the official residence of the Grimaldi family since the 13th century, is a former Genoese fortress dramatically perched on the Rock of Monaco above the sea, where the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place at 11:55 every morning.
The Prince's Palace of Monaco occupies the highest point of the Rock, the promontory that juts into the Mediterranean on which Monaco's old town and seat of government have stood for 700 years. The original structure was a Genoese fortress built in 1215, converted to a palace over the centuries following the Grimaldi family's capture of the Rock in 1297. The palace today is a mix of architectural styles reflecting its long history: medieval towers, Renaissance loggia, Baroque state rooms decorated with Flemish tapestries, French paintings, and frescoes by local artists. The Grimaldis occupy the palace when in Monaco (indicated by the flying of the national flag), and the state apartments, a sequence of magnificently decorated rooms that tell the story of Monaco's ruling dynasty, are open to the public when the royal family is absent. The daily Changing of the Guard at 11:55 AM is one of Monaco's most-attended spectacles, the Carabiniers du Prince in their white summer uniforms performing a ceremony modelled on those of European royal courts.
Did you know? The Grimaldi dynasty is the world's longest-ruling dynasty still in power. François Grimaldi captured the Rock of Monaco in 1297, and the Grimaldi family (with some periods of interruption) have ruled ever since. The current ruler, Prince Albert II, is a direct descendant of François Grimaldi, a continuity of 727 years in the same family.
