About Monaco Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas)

The Monaco Cathedral, built between 1875 and 1903 in Romanesque-Byzantine style, is the burial place of the Grimaldi princes and their consorts, including Princess Grace Kelly (who died in 1982) and Prince Rainier III.

The Cathédrale de Monaco, officially the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, more commonly known as Saint Nicholas Cathedral, stands on the highest point of the Rock, a few steps from the Prince's Palace. Built between 1875 and 1903 in Romanesque-Byzantine style, using white La Turbie stone, it replaced an earlier 13th-century church on the same site. The interior is deliberately simple and luminous, white stone walls, a mosaic-tiled floor, and a polyptych altarpiece by the 15th-century Nice painter Louis Bréa. The cathedral's most significant feature for visitors is the necropolis: the graves of the Grimaldi princes and their consorts are arranged in the choir and in a special chapel. The most visited grave is that of Princess Grace Kelly, the American actress Grace Kelly who married Prince Rainier III in 1956, died in a car accident on the Corniche road above Monaco in 1982, and was buried here in a ceremony watched by millions worldwide. Prince Rainier III was interred beside her in 2005.

Did you know? Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III married at Monaco Cathedral on 19 April 1956, one of the most watched television events of the 1950s, broadcast in 30 countries. Kelly wore a gown designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose, a dress of ivory silk taffeta with a 15-foot train, that influenced bridal fashion for decades afterwards.
