The Palazzo dei Musei in Modena houses the city's principal cultural collections, the most important of which are the Galleria Estense (Este Art Gallery) and the Biblioteca Estense Universitaria (Este University Library). The Galleria Estense is one of the finest art collections in northern Italy, assembled by the Este dynasty, the ruling family of Modena from 1288 until 1859, whose patronage of the arts rivalled that of the Medici in Florence. The collection includes major works by Velázquez (a remarkable portrait of Francesco I d'Este), Correggio, Guercino, and many important local and Italian masters. The Biblioteca Estense holds one of the greatest illuminated manuscript collections in the world, of which the jewel is the Bible of Borso d'Este: a two-volume bible completed in 1461 for Borso d'Este, decorated by Taddeo Crivelli and fifteen other illuminators with over 1,200 miniatures, and widely considered the greatest Italian illuminated manuscript and one of the finest books ever made.
