About Matera Cathedral
A magnificent 13th-century Romanesque cathedral on the ridge between the two Sassi, with a celebrated carved Lion doorway, a Byzantine-icon Madonna, and panoramic views over the entire cave city.
The Cathedral of Matera, dedicated to the Madonna della Bruna and Sant'Eustachio (Saint Eustace), stands on the highest point of the ridge between the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano, visible from almost everywhere in the city. Built in the Apulian Romanesque style in the 13th century (consecrated in 1270), it has a single bell tower and a beautifully carved main doorway flanked by stone lions. The interior was heavily renovated in the Baroque period but preserves important medieval art, including a Byzantine-style painted icon of the Madonna della Bruna, the patron saint of Matera whose feast day on July 2 is the city's greatest annual festival. The cathedral's position on the ridge gives it panoramic views over both Sassi.
Did you know? The Festa della Madonna della Bruna on July 2 has been celebrated in Matera since at least the 14th century. The ritual destruction of the float at the end of the procession, in which the crowd literally tears the cart apart to take pieces as relics, is one of the most unusual religious rituals in Italy, possibly adapted from pre-Christian seasonal destruction ceremonies.
