About Presqu'île
Lyon's central peninsula between the Saône and Rhône rivers, the commercial, cultural and civic heart of modern Lyon, with luxury shopping, grand squares, and the finest concentration of 18th-19th century Haussmann-style architecture.
The Presqu'île (literally "almost an island") is the long, narrow peninsula between Lyon's two rivers, and it forms the commercial, institutional, and cultural heart of modern Lyon. Bounded by the Saône to the west and the Rhône to the east, and narrowing to a point at the Confluence in the south where the two rivers meet, the Presqu'île contains Lyon's most important civic buildings, luxury shopping streets, cultural institutions, and the grand squares, Place Bellecour (the largest pedestrian square in Europe) and Place des Terreaux (with its monumental Bartholdi fountain). The architecture is predominantly 18th and 19th century: the large apartment blocks of the Haussmann era, the grand civic architecture of the Place Bellecour quarter, and the elegant facades of the shopping streets around Rue de la République and Rue Victor Hugo. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, the Opéra de Lyon, the Hôtel de Ville, and Les Halles Paul Bocuse are all on the Presqu'île. At ground level, the streets are lined with luxury boutiques, bookshops, pharmacies, and the cafés and brasseries that serve the office workers and shoppers of central Lyon.
Did you know? The Bartholdi Fountain in the Place des Terreaux was designed by the same sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who created the Statue of Liberty. The fountain's four horses represent the rivers of France flowing toward the ocean.
