The 2008 Beatles memorial plaza at the Reeperbahn marks the sites where the young band transformed into world-class musicians during their Hamburg years (1960–1962).
Beatles-Platz, opened in 2008 at the junction of the Reeperbahn and Grosse Freiheit, commemorates the crucial role Hamburg played in the development of the Beatles between 1960 and 1962. The circular plaza features five steel silhouette sculptures representing the Hamburg-era Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe, and Pete Best (not yet replaced by Ringo Starr). The figures stand on a circular disc designed to resemble a vinyl record, complete with grooves. Nearby Grosse Freiheit street, whose name means 'Great Freedom', was the site of the Indra Club, Kaiserkeller, and Star-Club where the Beatles played their legendary Hamburg residencies, sometimes for eight hours a night. The Star-Club itself burned down in 1987, but a plaque marks its location. Musical history plaques around the Reeperbahn detail the band's Hamburg story.
