About Lake Geneva (Lac Léman)

The largest lake in Western Europe, shared with France, with the Mont Blanc visible on clear days and a beautiful lakeside promenade wrapping around the Geneva waterfront.

Lake Geneva, Lac Léman in French, is the largest lake in Western Europe, with a surface area of 580 square kilometres and a length of 73 kilometres. Shared between Switzerland and France (roughly 60% Swiss, 40% French), the lake is formed by the Rhône River flowing through it and is one of the deepest lakes in Europe at 310 metres at its maximum depth. The Geneva waterfront is one of the most beautiful urban lakesides in Europe: the Quai du Mont-Blanc and Quai Wilson on the north shore, and the Quai Gustave-Ador on the south shore, provide kilometres of elegant promenade walking with views of the lake, the surrounding mountains, and the iconic Jet d'Eau. On exceptionally clear days, the view from the Geneva waterfront extends to Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres the highest peak in the Alps and in Western Europe, approximately 80 kilometres to the southeast. The lake's southern Geneva shoreline is dotted with grand 19th-century hotels, the headquarters of international organisations, and beautifully maintained parks. Lake Geneva is also a working body of water, with regular boat services connecting Geneva to lakeside towns including Lausanne, Évian, and Yvoire, making it one of the most scenic commuter and leisure transport routes in Europe.
