About Cappella Brancacci
The Sistine Chapel of the early Renaissance: Masaccio's revolutionary frescoes in Santa Maria del Carmine, completed by Filippino Lippi, that fundamentally changed European painting.
The Cappella Brancacci, in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Oltrarno, contains one of the most important fresco cycles in Western art history. The commission was given around 1424–25 to Masolino da Panicale, who worked alongside the young Masaccio (Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Simone), born in 1401.
Masaccio's contribution to the cycle was revolutionary: he introduced a naturalism unprecedented in Western art, figures with real weight, solid forms casting shadows, faces expressing genuine emotion, and a rigorous use of single-point linear perspective. His Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise remains one of the most psychologically powerful images in art history. Masaccio died in 1428, aged 26 or 27, before the cycle was complete. The frescoes were finished 50 years later by Filippino Lippi. Michelangelo, Leonardo, and virtually every major Florentine artist of the 15th and 16th centuries studied these frescoes as a foundational text of what painting could be.
Did you know? Masaccio was only 26 or 27 years old when he died in 1428, yet in his brief career he had already produced work that Michelangelo, Leonardo, and virtually every major Renaissance artist would study and learn from.
