About Greyfriars Bobby & Greyfriars Kirkyard
The famous statue of a loyal Skye Terrier and one of Edinburgh's most atmospheric and historically significant graveyards.
Greyfriars Kirkyard is one of Edinburgh's most storied burial grounds, dating back to the late 16th century. It is the final resting place of many notable Scots and the site where the National Covenant was signed in 1638. But its most famous resident is a small Skye Terrier named Bobby, who supposedly guarded his master's grave for 14 years until his own death in 1872. The cemetery is also rumoured to have inspired J.K. Rowling, names like Tom Riddell and McGonagall can be found on the gravestones.
