About Media Harbour (Medienhafen)
Düsseldorf's former commercial harbour reinvented as a creative hub, famous for Frank Gehry's three wildly undulating Neuer Zollhof towers and a flourishing restaurant and media industry scene.
The Medienhafen, Media Harbour, is Düsseldorf's most spectacular example of urban regeneration, transforming a derelict former commercial harbour just south of the Altstadt into a vibrant district of media companies, advertising agencies, restaurants, hotels, and innovative architecture. The district takes its name from the concentration of media and creative industries that relocated here from the 1990s onwards. The defining landmark is the Neuer Zollhof complex by Frank Gehry, completed in 1998-1999: three office towers with dramatically undulating facades in different materials, white plaster, polished steel, and red-orange brick, that have become one of the most recognisable architectural images in Germany. Other significant buildings include the Colorium (a rainbow-striped office tower) and works by David Chipperfield, Joe Coenen, and other leading architects. The waterfront promenade connects the Media Harbour to the adjacent Rhine promenade.
