About La Petite Venise (Little Venice)
A canal-side quarter of colourful half-timbered houses along the River Lauch, nicknamed 'Little Venice', and among Colmar's most photographed and visited corners, best seen from the Pont Saint-Pierre.
La Petite Venise, or 'Little Venice', is an informal nickname for the canal-side quarter that follows the River Lauch through the southeast of Colmar's old town. The name is usually explained by the rows of colourful half-timbered houses lining both banks, though it is a modern tourist label rather than a historic or official one. The Lauch itself rises in the Vosges, runs some 45 kilometres past Guebwiller and across the Alsace plain, and joins the River Ill west of the town.
For centuries the river was a working route, used by market gardeners, fishmongers and tanners who moved goods by flat-bottomed boat through the Krutenau district. The Quai de la Poissonnerie was the fishermen's quarter, its painted houses tied to the powerful fishing corporation, with fresh catch sold on the quay and kept in riverside fish ponds. The Pont Saint-Pierre offers one of the town's most photographed views, and seasonal boat tours still depart from beneath it.
Did you know? The 'Little Venice' name is pure marketing: only one river, the Lauch, threads the quarter, which is why one local guide has argued that 'Little Bruges' would actually be the more honest nickname.
