About Dane John Gardens
Canterbury's elegant Georgian park along the medieval walls, laid out from 1790, with a bandstand, a fountain and an ancient mound that was a Roman burial place and later a Norman castle.
Dane John Gardens is a public park in the south-east corner of Canterbury's medieval city walls, laid out between 1790 and 1803 by the alderman James Simmons, who landscaped an ancient mound and the strip along the walls into an elegant civic pleasure ground, with tree-lined avenues, a bandstand and a fountain. The name 'Dane John' is generally thought to be a corruption of the Norman French 'donjon' (castle keep), rather than a reference to Danes.
The Dane John Mound began as a burial mound in Roman times and was reused after 1066 for a timber motte-and-bailey castle, before a stone castle was built nearby in 1123. The monument on top of the mound is generally said to commemorate Simmons. The gardens are on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens (Grade II), and the monument and sundial are separately Grade II listed.
Did you know? Despite the name, the Dane John has probably nothing to do with Danes; most scholars think it is a worn-down form of the Norman French 'donjon', a castle keep, recalling the Norman castle that once stood here.
