Bern Münster is the largest and most architecturally magnificent medieval church in Switzerland. Construction began in 1421 and the building was not fully completed until 1893, when the neo-Gothic spire was finally finished, 472 years of continuous construction. The church is Late Gothic in style throughout, and its principal portal features one of the most elaborate tympanum sculptures of the 15th century anywhere in Europe, depicting the Last Judgment with over 230 figures. The interior is 73 metres long, with remarkable stained glass windows including the 15th-century Dance of Death window and the remarkable choir stalls. Climbing the 344 steps of the spire rewards visitors with panoramic views over Bern, the Aare, and the Alps. The Münster terrace below the church is one of the finest urban overlooks in Switzerland.
