About Kornhausbrücke (Granary Bridge)
One of Switzerland's most elegant steel arch bridges (1898) spanning the Aare gorge north of the old town, offering dramatic views of the river, the medieval city walls, and the Rosengarten hill.
The Kornhausbrücke is one of the most beautiful bridges in Bern and one of the finest late-19th-century steel arch bridges in Switzerland. Completed in 1898, the bridge spans the deep Aare gorge north of the old town with a large central steel arch flanked by smaller arches, connecting the old town plateau with the northern districts of Bern. The bridge's total length is 382 metres and it rises about 48 metres above the Aare. From the bridge, the views along the Aare gorge are remarkable: looking upstream you see the old town's medieval cliff walls and the backs of the buildings along the Schifflaube; looking downstream you see the river curving away under the rocky hillside. The bridge is also notable as a former tram bridge, Bern's famous trams once crossed here, and it remains open to all road traffic and pedestrians today.
