About St Anne's Cathedral
Belfast's Cathedral Church of the Church of Ireland, in the Hiberno-Romanesque style, featuring a 150,000-tessera mosaic floor, the tomb of Lord Carson, and the iconic modern Spire of Hope.
St Anne's Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of Saint Anne, is the mother church of the Church of Ireland diocese of Connor, Down and Dromore, and one of the most architecturally distinctive churches in all of Ireland. Though its solid Hiberno-Romanesque architecture suggests great antiquity, construction began in 1899, with the nave consecrated in 1904, and the building has never been officially declared complete. The original architect Sir Thomas Drew based the design on the Hiberno-Romanesque style of early Irish church architecture, with its rounded arches, thick stone walls, and geometric ornament. The cathedral's most celebrated interior feature is its extraordinary mosaic floor, containing an estimated 150,000 individual tiles of glass, marble, and stone, laid in intricate geometric and figurative patterns by different craftsmen over several decades. In the south aisle lies the tomb of Lord Edward Carson, the Dublin-born barrister who led Ulster Unionist resistance to Irish Home Rule. The 40-metre stainless steel Spire of Hope, added in 2007 to mark the decade of reconciliation following the Good Friday Agreement, pierces the roof at the crossing and has become a beloved feature of the Belfast skyline.
Did you know? St Anne's Cathedral has never been officially declared complete since construction began in 1899, additions and modifications continue to this day, making it an evolving building over 125 years.
