About Eilandje: The Regenerated Dock District

A former warehouse district transformed into Antwerp's most exciting cultural quarter, home to the MAS museum, Red Star Line Museum, and a thriving community of cafes and galleries.

The Eilandje, 'Little Island', is Antwerp's most dramatically transformed urban quarter: a nineteenth-century dock district that was largely abandoned in the latter half of the twentieth century as the port moved to larger, more modern facilities, and has been regenerated since the 2000s into one of the most interesting urban neighbourhoods in Belgium.

The regeneration was anchored by two major cultural institutions: the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) which opened in 2011, and the Red Star Line Museum which opened in 2013. Around these anchor institutions, the neighbourhood has developed a thriving culture of cafes, restaurants, galleries, apartments, and creative businesses in converted dock buildings and warehouses. The old pump house, the former harbour master's offices, and the restored dock basins have all found new lives. The neighbourhood now hosts major events including the Antwerp port festivals and outdoor cinema screenings on the water.

Did you know? Eilandje was one of Antwerp's most desolate areas in the 1980s and 1990s, its transformation since 2000 is one of Europe's most celebrated urban regeneration success stories.
