About Jordaan

Amsterdam's most charming neighbourhood, a 17th-century artisan quarter of narrow streets, independent boutiques, brown cafés, and hidden hofjes (almshouse gardens).

The Jordaan is Amsterdam's most beloved neighbourhood, a dense, intimate district of narrow streets, small canals, and stepped-gable houses that was built in the seventeenth century to house the artisans and workers who supported the Golden Age merchant economy. Originally a working-class district of dyers, weavers, tanners, and immigrants (Huguenot refugees from France gave the neighbourhood its possibly French-derived name), the Jordaan underwent dramatic gentrification from the 1970s onward and is now one of Amsterdam's most expensive and sought-after places to live. Yet it has retained its characteristic intimacy and authentic neighbourhood feel. The Jordaan is famous for its hidden hofjes, enclosed almshouse courtyards from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, accessible through narrow gates, offering sudden pockets of extraordinary silence in the heart of the city. It is also known for its independent boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and brown cafés, the cosy, dark-panelled traditional Dutch pubs that seem to have been there forever.

Did you know? The Jordaan has at least 20 hidden hofjes, walled garden courtyards, accessible through unmarked doors in ordinary-looking walls.
