About Teatro Romano & Archaeological Museum

A remarkably preserved 1st-century BC Roman theatre cut into the hillside above the Adige, now hosting summer Shakespeare and opera performances, with an archaeological museum in the former convent above.

The Teatro Romano is a remarkably intact Roman theatre dating from the 1st century BC, carved into the north bank cliff of the Adige facing the historic city. Unlike an amphitheatre (which is fully enclosed for gladiatorial combat), this is a true theatre with a semicircular cavea of tiered seating facing an elaborate stage building. Originally seating up to 15,000 spectators, the theatre now hosts the Estate Teatrale Veronese summer season of Shakespeare and classical plays, as well as the Verona Jazz festival. The former Benedictine convent of San Girolamo, built on the upper tiers in the medieval period, now houses the Museo Archeologico, with a superb collection of Roman sculpture, mosaics, glass, and bronzes from ancient Verona. The view from the upper theatre over the Adige and Ponte Pietra toward the medieval city is among the finest in the Veneto.

Did you know? A Benedictine convent was built directly on top of the ancient theatre's upper tiers in the medieval period, the monks lived in one of the most spectacularly sited monasteries in Italy.
