About Ponte Pietra
Verona's oldest bridge, with Roman origins from the 1st century BC, spanning the Adige with some original Roman arches still intact, one of the most photographed spots in the city.
Ponte Pietra, the Stone Bridge, is Verona's oldest surviving bridge and one of the finest Roman bridges in northern Italy, originally built in the first century BC when Verona was an important Roman colony. Of its five arches, two are original Roman work and the rest date from later medieval and Venetian rebuildings; four arches were blown up in WWII and rebuilt, again using stones recovered from the riverbed. The bridge connects the historic centre with the Veronese hillside neighbourhood of San Pietro, providing access to the Roman theatre above. From the bridge, the view looking back toward the city, with the Roman theatre on its cliff above and Verona's medieval towers and cathedral behind, is one of the most beautiful in the Veneto. The warm rose-pink brick of the Roman portions glows magnificently at sunset, making this perhaps the single most atmospheric viewpoint in Verona.
Did you know? Two of Ponte Pietra's five arches are original Roman construction from the 1st century BC, the others were rebuilt after WWII using stones recovered from the Adige riverbed.
