About Toscanini Birthplace Museum
The birthplace of Arturo Toscanini, born in Parma on 25 March 1867 and destined to become the most celebrated orchestral conductor of the 20th century, is preserved as a small museum in the city centre, documenting his extraordinary career at La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Arturo Toscanini was born in Parma on 25 March 1867, the son of a tailor. He studied cello at the Parma Conservatory and graduated in 1885 with the highest marks in his class. His conducting career began accidentally: in Rio de Janeiro in 1886, he was substituted for an absent conductor at a performance of Aida and led the opera from memory, without a score, receiving a standing ovation. He went on to become the most celebrated orchestral and operatic conductor of the early 20th century, holding the principal conducting positions at La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble created specifically for him by NBC Radio in 1937. Toscanini was famous for the precision of his beat, his encyclopaedic musical memory (he conducted virtually everything from memory due to a severe case of myopia), his ferocious perfectionism, his tempestuous rehearsal manner, and his principled refusal to perform in Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy. The birthplace museum in Parma contains personal objects, photographs, batons, and memorabilia relating to his life and career.
Did you know? Toscanini conducted virtually everything from memory throughout his career, not out of showmanship but necessity, as severe myopia made reading a score impossible from the podium. He memorised scores with photographic completeness, including every instrumental part, and could immediately identify any wrong note in the orchestra.
