About Theatine Church

A piece of Baroque Rome dropped over the Odeonsplatz, the butter-yellow court church an Italian princess vowed to build for the birth of her son, and the crypt of Bavaria's kings.

The Theatinerkirche (St. Kajetan) is the Italian High-Baroque court church of the Wittelsbachs, on the Odeonsplatz. It was founded in fulfilment of a vow made by Electress Henriette Adelaide of Savoy in thanks for the birth of her son and heir, the future Elector Max Emanuel, in 1662. Construction began in 1663 to designs by the Bolognese architect Agostino Barelli, and was continued from 1674 by Enrico Zuccalli, who shaped the dome and towers; it was the first major church in the Italian Baroque style north of the Alps. The dome rises to about 70 metres. The building's Rococo facade was added a century later, from around 1765, by François de Cuvilliés the Elder and his son. Its crypt holds some 47 members of the House of Wittelsbach, among them Emperor Charles VII, several kings of Bavaria, and Crown Prince Rupprecht. The church's yellow colouring is a later scheme.

Did you know? The church took more than a century to reach its final look: begun by a Bolognese architect in 1663, its dome shaped by another Italian in the 1670s, and its curling Rococo facade added only around 1765.
