About Cuvilliés Theatre

A jewel-box of gilded Rococo boxes where Mozart premiered Idomeneo in 1781, its carved interior unbolted and hidden in the war, then rebuilt, original but on a new spot.

The Cuvilliés Theatre is the Rococo court theatre of the Munich Residenz, built in the early 1750s for Elector Maximilian III Joseph to designs by François de Cuvilliés the Elder, and opened in 1753. Its four tiers of carved, gilded and painted boxes make it one of the finest Rococo auditoriums in Europe. Mozart's opera Idomeneo received its world premiere here on 29 January 1781. In 1943 the theatre's carved wooden interior was dismantled and removed to safety; the building that housed it was then destroyed by bombing in 1944. After the war the rescued interior was reassembled in a new position within the Residenz, at the Brunnenhof, and the theatre reopened in 1958 for Munich's 800th anniversary. The auditorium's decoration is therefore original 18th-century work, though it no longer stands on its original site. It is still used for performances.

Did you know? When the rescued theatre reopened in 1958, on Munich's 800th birthday, it did so with another Mozart opera: The Marriage of Figaro.
