About Monopoli Historic Centre
A beautifully preserved Baroque old town on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, less visited than Polignano a Mare but equally atmospheric, with whitewashed alleys, Baroque church facades, a working fishing harbour, and a Charles V castle at the water's edge. Monopoli offers an authentic southern Italian coastal experience with fewer crowds.
Monopoli is a historic coastal city of approximately 49,000 inhabitants in the province of Bari, Puglia, located 45km southeast of Bari and 8km south of Polignano a Mare on the Adriatic coast. The city's historic centre is a compact, well-preserved Baroque nucleus built on a small promontory jutting into the Adriatic, with the working fishing harbour on one side and the 16th-century Spanish castle on the sea wall on the other. Unlike Polignano a Mare, which is essentially a village adapted to tourism, Monopoli is a functioning mid-sized city with a diverse economy (agriculture, industry, and tourism) and a historic centre that has not been overwhelmed by the tourist trade. The old town preserves an authentic atmosphere of daily life, the fish market, the neighbourhood bars, the residents going about their business, alongside its impressive collection of Baroque churches, the picturesque old harbour, and the waterside castle. Monopoli is particularly noted for its Baroque architectural heritage: the historic centre contains a remarkable number of Baroque churches within a very small area, making it one of the most concentrated Baroque townscapes in Puglia.
Did you know? Monopoli's name derives from the Greek "Monopolis" (single city or only city), suggesting it was founded as a single urban settlement on a coast where other inhabited sites were more dispersed. The town was already established in the Byzantine period and was an important port in the medieval Kingdom of Naples, trading olive oil, grain, and wine with Venice, Dubrovnik, and the ports of the Levant.
