About Castello Carlo V
A 16th-century Spanish castle built at the water's edge on the orders of Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain) to defend the Apulian coast against Ottoman naval raids. One of the most dramatically sited coastal castles in southern Italy, with seawater against its walls on three sides and superb views of the old harbour and the Adriatic.
The Castello Carlo V (Castle of Charles V) is the most prominent landmark of Monopoli, located directly at the sea's edge at the southern tip of the historic centre's promontory. The castle was built in the 16th century, during the period of Spanish rule over the Kingdom of Naples, as part of a major programme of coastal fortification undertaken by the Emperor Charles V to defend the Apulian coast against Ottoman naval raids that were a constant threat in the mid-16th century. The castle is a typical example of 16th-century Spanish military architecture: a compact pentagonal plan with projecting corner bastions, low thick walls designed to resist artillery, and a wide defensive moat, on the seaward sides filled permanently with seawater, giving the impression that the castle sits directly in the Adriatic. The castle has been used as an events venue since its restoration in the 20th century, hosting concerts, art exhibitions, and cultural events, particularly in the summer season. Its location, at the meeting point of the old harbour, the old town walls, and the open sea, makes it the defining architectural landmark of Monopoli.
Did you know? Charles V (1500-1558) was one of the most powerful monarchs in European history, ruling simultaneously as Holy Roman Emperor (through the Habsburg inheritance) and as King of Spain (as Charles I), giving him control over an empire that stretched from the Americas to the Philippines and from Spain to the borders of the Ottoman Empire. His coastal fortification programme in southern Italy was one of many fronts in his lifelong contest with Ottoman power.
