About Piazza Vittorio Veneto

The main square of the upper city of Matera, where a glass floor reveals the Palombaro Lungo cistern below, and where the evening passeggiata takes place with the panoramic backdrop of the Sassi descending into the ravines.

The Piazza Vittorio Veneto is the main public square of the upper city of Matera, serving as the primary meeting point and social space for the city's residents. The square is large and slightly irregular in shape, bordered on one side by the Palazzo dell'Annunziata and the church of the Purgatorio, and on the other sides by cafés, restaurants, and commercial establishments. Its most distinctive feature is the glass-floored viewpoint installed in 2013, through which visitors can look down into the Palombaro Lungo cistern beneath the square. The square also serves as the starting point for the panoramic walk along the ridge of the Sassi, looking south toward the two ravines, that is one of the finest urban walks in southern Italy.

Did you know? The Piazza Vittorio Veneto is named for the Battle of Vittorio Veneto (October–November 1918), the final Italian offensive of the First World War that resulted in the defeat of Austria-Hungary. The square was renamed in the post-World War I period, as were many public squares across Italy, as part of the patriotic commemoration of the Italian victory.
