About Echternach (Oldest City)

Luxembourg's oldest city, founded by St Willibrord in 698, a medieval gem in the Sûre valley with the famous Abbey, a UNESCO Dancing Procession, and beautiful old town streets.

Echternach is the oldest city in Luxembourg, founded in 698 by the Anglo-Saxon missionary St Willibrord, who established a Benedictine abbey here that became one of the most important monasteries in the Carolingian world. The town sits in the valley of the Sûre river in the Little Switzerland (Petite Suisse) region of eastern Luxembourg, surrounded by sandstone cliffs and forested hills. The medieval town centre, with its market square, old houses, and the great basilica built over the abbey ruins, is one of the best-preserved in Luxembourg. Echternach is most famous for its annual Whit Tuesday Dancing Procession, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage: thousands of participants dance through the streets of the town in a ritual procession that has taken place without interruption since the Middle Ages. The surrounding area, with its rock formations, caves, and trails, is also one of Luxembourg's finest natural landscapes.

Did you know? Echternach was founded in 698 AD by St Willibrord, making it Luxembourg's oldest city, over 1,300 years of continuous urban history.
