About Covent Garden
A lively piazza with street performers, boutique shops, and restaurants, centred around the historic covered market building.
Covent Garden is one of London's most popular and atmospheric districts. The elegant piazza was designed in the 1630s by Inigo Jones as the first formal public square in England, inspired by the piazzas of Italy. For centuries it was London's main fruit and vegetable market until the market moved to Nine Elms in 1974.
The beautifully restored market building, designed by Charles Fowler in 1830, now houses speciality shops, craft stalls, and restaurants. The piazza is famous for its street performers, musicians, acrobats, magicians, and living statues entertain crowds throughout the day.
The Royal Opera House sits at the eastern edge, making Covent Garden a hub for performing arts, while the Transport Museum and numerous theatres add to the cultural offering.
