About Tremezzina & Lenno: Bay of Silence

Tremezzina is the collective name for the string of gentle lakeside villages, Lenno, Mezzegra, Ossuccio, and Tremezzo, on the western shore of Lake Como's central lake, known as the 'Bay of Silence' for its sheltered microclimate, ancient olive groves, and proximity to Villa del Balbianello.

Tremezzina is the municipality formed in 2014 by the merger of the villages of Lenno, Mezzegra, Ossuccio, and Tremezzo on the western shore of Lake Como's central section. The area occupies a particularly sheltered bay facing east across the water toward Bellagio, and the microclimate created by the surrounding mountains is so mild that ancient olive groves, some of which are believed to be over 500 years old, grow on the hillside above the lake, producing a small but exceptional local oil. The area is known locally as the Bay of Silence. Lenno, at the southern end, is the village from which boats depart to Villa del Balbianello on its promontory; it also has a Romanesque church and a small harbour. Mezzegra, in the hills above, is the village where Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were executed by partisan forces on 28 April 1945. Tremezzo is the main village with Villa Carlotta. The neighbouring village of Griante, just to the north, has panoramic views and was historically popular with travellers; Winston Churchill came to paint here in 1945.

Did you know? In April 1945, Benito Mussolini, Italy's Fascist dictator, was captured by Communist partisans while attempting to flee to Switzerland with a German convoy near Lake Como. He was taken to the village of Mezzegra in the Tremezzina hills, and executed there on 28 April 1945, two days before Hitler's death.
