About Belfast City Hall
A magnificent Portland stone Renaissance Revival building opened in 1906, the centrepiece of Donegall Square and the proud symbol of Belfast's civic identity.
Belfast City Hall is the crowning civic achievement of a city that, at the turn of the twentieth century, was one of the wealthiest in the British Empire. Designed by London architect Alfred Brumwell Thomas, who won an open competition in 1896, the building was constructed of gleaming Portland stone in the Baroque Revival style. Its central copper dome rises 53 metres above Donegall Square, flanked by four corner towers and a symmetrical facade of elaborate carved stone. Completed in 1906 at a cost of £369,000, it replaced an earlier merchant exchange on the same site. Today the City Hall is home to Belfast City Council and is the venue for major civic events. Free guided tours run throughout the week, revealing the Great Hall, the grand staircase with its Italianate marble floor, and stained glass windows depicting Belfast's industrial heritage. The Titanic Memorial Garden in the grounds honours those lost in the 1912 disaster.
Did you know? Belfast City Hall's copper dome is one of four domes on the building, and it was deliberately designed to be seen from every direction across the city.
