About Santa Maria del Pi

A magnificent 14th-century Gothic church in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, Santa Maria del Pi is named for a pine tree that once stood at its entrance, and features one of the largest Gothic rose windows in the world, a beautifully austere single nave interior, and a lovely plaza setting.

Santa Maria del Pi is one of the finest Gothic churches in Barcelona, a 14th-century masterpiece of Catalan Gothic architecture whose simple single-nave interior, lit by one of the largest rose windows in the world, offers a contemplative space of extraordinary power. The church was built between 1322 and 1453, and takes its name ('of the Pine') from a pine tree that stood at its entrance until the 17th century. Three adjacent plazas, the Plaça del Pi, the Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol, and the Plaça dels Bancs, create one of the most atmospheric settings in the Gothic Quarter, surrounded by medieval buildings and often animated by street musicians and artists.

Did you know? The rose window of Santa Maria del Pi measures 8.15 metres in diameter and is one of the largest in the world, yet for 500 years it was thought to be even larger and to hold the world record, until more accurate measurements were taken in the 20th century.
