About Mercat de la Boqueria

Barcelona's legendary covered market on Las Ramblas, a spectacular iron and glass hall built in the 19th century, with a dazzling display of fresh produce, seafood, meats, and prepared foods that makes it one of the most visited food markets in the world.

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, universally known as La Boqueria, is the most famous market in Barcelona and one of the most celebrated food markets in the world. It stands on Las Ramblas, beneath a spectacular iron and glass canopy designed in the Modernisme style, on a site that has been a market since the 13th century. The current structure was built between 1836 and 1840 and substantially enlarged and improved in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Inside, the stalls are arranged in a dense labyrinth of colour, smell, and spectacle: fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood displayed on ice, hanging Iberian hams, prepared foods, spices, nuts, and every conceivable ingredient of Catalan and Spanish cuisine. The market is both a working market for the restaurants and residents of the neighbourhood and one of the city's great tourist attractions. The fame has, unfortunately, also brought crowds and prices that have somewhat displaced the original clientele, local residents and chefs tend to shop at the edges of the market or at the other, less touristic markets of the city. But the visual spectacle of La Boqueria remains extraordinary, and the fresh produce is genuinely outstanding.

Did you know? A market has existed on the site of La Boqueria since 1217, making it over 800 years old, it began as an open-air market along the old city wall and was progressively formalized, covered, and enlarged over the centuries.
