About Parc de la Ciutadella

Barcelona's principal public park, on the site of a demolished Bourbon fortress, with a monumental cascade fountain (designed by a young Gaudí), a boating lake, the zoo, and the Catalan Parliament building.

The Parc de la Ciutadella is Barcelona's principal public park and one of the great civic spaces of the city, a large green oasis adjacent to the Born district and Barceloneta, created on the site of the former Citadel fortress that Philip V built after 1714 to control the conquered city. The fortress, deeply resented by Catalans as a symbol of Bourbon oppression, was demolished in the 1860s and the site was given to the city. Barcelona used it first for the 1888 Universal Exposition, which was the beginning of the city's reinvention as a modern European capital, and then converted it into a permanent public park. The park's most spectacular feature is the monumental Cascade fountain, a theatrical baroque waterfall and sculpture group that was designed in part by a young Antoni Gaudí while he was still a student. Other features include a large boating lake, the Barcelona Zoo, and the Catalan Parliament building (housed in the former Arsenal building of the citadel). The park is one of the most popular green spaces in the city, beloved by joggers, families, and anyone wanting to escape the density of the Eixample.

Did you know? The Cascade fountain in the park was designed by Josep Fontserè, but the ornamental sculptural details, the dragons, the horses, the decorative flourishes, were the work of a 22-year-old architecture student named Antoni Gaudí, who would go on to build the Sagrada Família.
