About Salerno: Gateway to the Amalfi Coast

Salerno serves as the main eastern gateway to the Amalfi Coast, with ferries to Positano and Amalfi from the Molo Manfredi terminal, buses via the SS163 coastal road, and connections to Paestum, Cilento, and the broader region of Campania.

Salerno is the main transport hub for the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, both by sea and by road. From the Molo Manfredi ferry terminal on the lungomare, fast ferries and hydrofoils run seasonally to Positano, Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, and other Amalfi Coast villages, as well as to Capri and Naples. The SITA bus service operates year-round along the SS163 coastal road from Salerno to Amalfi and Positano, the same hairpin-bend coastal road that is one of the most dramatically beautiful drives in Europe. Salerno's main railway station provides connections to Naples (45 minutes), Rome (2.5 hours), and the national rail network. The city is also the starting point for visits to Paestum (40km south by bus or train) and Cilento National Park. Compared to Sorrento, which serves as the western Amalfi Coast hub, Salerno has the advantage of being cheaper, less touristically saturated, and better connected to the national rail network.

Did you know? Salerno's railway station is served by Trenitalia's high-speed Frecciarossa trains, making it the southernmost regular stop of Italy's high-speed rail network on the Tyrrhenian coast. The journey from Rome to Salerno takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, and from Milan approximately 4 hours 30 minutes.
