About Sant'Ignazio Church & Piazza di Sant'Ignazio
A Jesuit Baroque church with one of the most spectacular illusionistic ceiling frescoes in the world, and a perfectly preserved 18th-century Rococo square outside.
The Church of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola a Campo Marzio was built as the main church of the Collegio Romano, the Jesuit college of Rome, and is dedicated to St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. Construction began in 1626 and was completed in 1685. The church's exterior is simple; the interior is one of the most dazzling in Rome.
The ceiling fresco by the Jesuit brother Andrea Pozzo (painted 1691–1694) represents the Apotheosis of St Ignatius and the missionary work of the Jesuits, and it is one of the greatest masterpieces of illusionistic ceiling painting in the world. From a disc marked on the floor of the nave, the ceiling appears to soar into an enormous sky, supported by columns that vanish into the clouds. The perspective is absolutely convincing until you move away from the disc, then the ceiling 'collapses' into geometric nonsense. The apse dome is also fake: Pozzo painted a trompe l'oeil dome on a flat canvas to substitute for a real dome the Jesuits could not afford to build.
Outside, the Piazza di Sant'Ignazio is one of Rome's most beautiful small squares, an 18th-century Rococo composition by architect Filippo Raguzzini (1727–1728), with curved palace facades creating a theatrical theatrical stage set.
Did you know? There are two marble discs on the nave floor, one marks the perfect viewing point for the ceiling fresco, the other for the fake dome. From any other position both illusions break down completely.
