About Catacombs of San Callisto

The official burial ground of the early popes, 20 km of underground tunnels on four levels containing 500,000 burials, including the Crypt of the Popes and early Christian art.

The Catacombs of San Callisto are the most important early Christian burial site in the world, serving as the official cemetery of the Roman Church from the late 2nd century until the early 5th century. Named after St Callixtus, the deacon put in charge of the cemetery by Pope Zephyrinus around 200 AD (and who later became Pope Callixtus I), the catacombs extend over 15 hectares and contain over 20 kilometres of galleries on four underground levels.

The most sacred area is the Crypt of the Popes, where nine of the sixteen popes who died between 235 and 283 AD were buried, along with St Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Early Christian paintings decorating the walls and ceilings represent some of the oldest surviving Christian art anywhere in the world, fish symbols, doves, anchors, and scenes from the Bible and early Christian life.

Guided tours in multiple languages descend into the catacombs, following a carefully maintained network of lit passages. About 200,000 visitors per year make this one of Rome's most atmospheric and sobering underground experiences.

Did you know? The catacombs contain some of the oldest Christian paintings in existence, 2nd and 3rd century images of fish, doves, and Biblical scenes that predate the Edict of Milan by over a century.
