About Parma Cathedral

Parma Cathedral is a supreme example of Romanesque architecture in northern Italy, built in the 12th century and famous above all for Correggio's breathtaking fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin in the dome, a revolutionary achievement in illusionistic ceiling painting.

Parma Cathedral, the Duomo di Parma, is one of the finest Romanesque churches in northern Italy, constructed principally in the 12th century and consecrated in 1106 by Pope Paschal II. The cathedral's fame rests on two extraordinary works of art. The first is Benedetto Antelami's sculptural relief of the Deposition of Christ (1178), carved in pink Verona marble and set into the south wall of the nave, considered one of the masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture in Italy. The second, and more famous, is the fresco covering the entire interior of the dome, painted by Antonio Allegri da Correggio between 1526 and 1530. The Assumption of the Virgin shows the Virgin Mary ascending into heaven surrounded by a crowd of apostles, saints, and angels arranged on clouds in a spectacular spiral viewed from below, the entire composition appears to open the dome into the sky above. Correggio's bold use of foreshortening, his mastery of light and shadow, and his joyful, dynamic composition were revolutionary for their time and influenced ceiling painting across Europe for the next two centuries.

Did you know? When church officials first saw Correggio's completed dome fresco, one reportedly described it as looking like 'a hash of frogs' legs', a reaction that has been endlessly quoted as an example of contemporary incomprehension of artistic innovation, though most subsequent viewers have considered it one of the greatest paintings in Italy.
